:: EvenStar Weyrhold ::
Evenstar Weyrhold. A
blessing, or a curse, depending on who you ask. The Holds believed it to be a
gift, as a place to send the excess people crowding the Holds beyond
overpopulation. The Halls believe it to be an opportunity, as a place with new,
unexploited resources. The Weyrs, on the other hand, consider Evenstar nothing
but trouble.
In the 3rd Turn before the Ninth Pass, a plague swept the Northern Continent.
Riders died and dragons went /between/, Halls lost many of the most experienced
craftpeople, and Holds lost enough that they stopped allowing Searching and
apprenticing. The increased clutches were not seen as preparing for a Pass, but
as attempting to replenish the population. But without candidates for
Impression, many dragonets died unImpressed.
This changed when Thread began to fall. Any Searchrider who visited a Hold
returned to the Weyr with multiple candidates. During the first Turn, when
Thread falling being missed was a common occurrence, it was a common practice
for one Searchrider to be accompanied by several large dragons to take the
candidates. Any candidates that did not Impress after their third try were
apprenticed to crafts.
Slowly the Weyrs, Halls, and Holds repopulated. Everything seemed to be going
well. Dragon population was at a high, with over 20 queens divided among six
Weyrs. The Halls were flourishing, with a new journeyman per craft per sevenday,
it seemed. The Holds had nearly doubled in population, and the Northern
Continent seemed near to bursting.
A light in the sky appeared in the 18th Turn of the Pass. The dragons perched
upon the ledges and hissed at it, communicating worry to puzzled riders. As the
dragons flew into a panic, all riders left their weyrs to see, just as something
caused Timor to break apart in a huge flash. The people of Pern took it as a
dark omen, fearing that danger was to come.
The first sign that the flash had deadly consequences was the strange shadows
cast that night. When the dawn came, the people saw a ring of rocks and rubble
floating above them, close enough to be seen, far enough to be harmless...at
first. When the pieces began to fall, scarring the land, the people realized
that this menace might be as bad as Thread.
In the 20th Turn, a meteorite destroyed High Reaches Hold. The people there were
shifted into other Holds, and the overcrowding increased. The Holds tried to
send more people to the Weyrs, which were overfull with dragons, so the
crafthalls began to fill.
In the same turn a small Hold was founded on one of the Eastern islands. No Weyr
was there; the people who lived there would have to be self-reliant and not be
afraid to shelter during Threadfall. A surprising number of people went, and the
crafthalls soon followed.
The Hold, called Evenstar, flourished for three years, with very little contact
with the outside world. Then, one morning, they awoke to find a gold and a
bronze dragon settling down outside the Hold. The riders offered the Lord and
Lady Holder passage to a meeting of the Weyrs.
At the High Reaches meeting the prospect of establishing a Weyr for Evenstar was
brought up. The Holders remarked that there would be no inactive volcano for a
Weyr, though there was an active one, so the Weyrleaders devised a plan for a
Weyrhold. Things were going well, until one gold rose unexpectedly. Two more
rose afterwards, and the ensuing fight took the lives of two queens and three
bronzes.
The Holders were returned to Evenstar, despairing of ever getting a Weyrhold. No
one was more surprised then them when a sevenday later riders arrived and began
to
construct the Weyrhold. The people of the Hold and Halls were grateful for the
proctection, and tithed heavily to the completed Weyrhold.
The first Lord and Lady Weyrholder were P'jul, riderof bronze Weanth, and Aldona,
rider of gold Eldorath. Together the lead the Weyrhold for a year. But Weanth
died in a mating flight accident with the Weyrwoman's Second, and Eldorath was
the only queen left. The Weyrhold appealed to the Weyrs for a queen, and after
much deliberation the pair Lia and Cenidath of Telgar were selected. The day
they received the news, Eldorath was flown by Eranth, ridden by H'mis.
Then disaster struck. A plague swept Evenstar. Riders were the most affected;
one in two adult riders died and one in four weyrlings. The Holds and Halls were
not affected as badly, due to the riders isolating themselves, but Healers died
while treating, and one small hold was obliterated.
Eldorath's clutch was twenty-seven eggs strong, with a gold egg, perhaps They
had no idea where they were going to get that many Candidates, for those that
had survived and wished to Stand were already at the Weyrhold. However, they
recieved the news that Telgar Weyr had been destroyed. Five queens had died,
three of Telgar's four and two who came to help. Among the deceased was Lia and
Cenidath.
All the other Weyrs were overcrowded, with too many riders and so many
Candidates that only one in five Impressed. Evenstar sent out a call for adult
riders, welcoming all transfers. Candidates from other Weyrs came as well,
seeking Impression at a place with better odds.
Another Turn was almost past when Aldona proclaimed that after Eldorath's next
rising she would retire. The Weyrhold was shocked and saddened, but knew that
the pair's health was failing. It was decided that Aldona would still do
administrative duties and most of the tasks she had done before, but that she
would no longer be the primary queen or the Lady Weyrholder.
And thus we set the stage for our role-play, yes?

History:
Evenstar Hold has been around for five turns and is proud to say that they breed
the best runners that the Eastern Islands can offer. When meteoroids began to
rain down on the Southern and Northern continents, the people began looking for
a new place to go. Sailing from their homes they soon found themselves at the
Eastern Islands.
Lord Adarian (36 turns), and Lady Tiaza (34 turns) were, by the Conclave, put
in as Lady and Lord Holder of EvenStar Hold, which, in three turns, was to be
beholden to EvenStar Weyrhold for it’s protection against threads.
However, things were not all golden eggs for the people of EvenStar Hold. When
they first arrived, and began breeding their runners they noticed strange things
about their beasts. They began trembling, stumbling, and were soon deemed blind.
The animals not being immune to the new plants and grasses of the island soon
spread the epidemic to the residents and beastcrafters.
With the help of the Masterfarmer, Masterbeastcrafter, and the Healer Hall the
epidemic was soon brought under control and after five turns the animals and
people have become adapted to the island. |
